San Marino etched their name into football history with a momentous victory, securing their first-ever competitive win by defeating Liechtenstein in the Nations League.
Known as one of the smallest and most underdog teams in international football, San Marino's triumph marks a turning point for the nation, ending years of near misses and hard-fought battles. Their long-awaited success sparked scenes of celebration, as a team once written off proved that persistence and belief can lead to unforgettable moments on the pitch.
With this win, the world’s lowest-ranked team, San Marino, ended the longest winless streak in football history—140 games over two decades.
Their last victory came in 2004, also against Liechtenstein and by the same scoreline.
This marks only their second-ever win, thanks to 19-year-old Nicko Sensoli, who wasn’t even born when San Marino last tasted victory.
Sensoli scored the decisive goal in the 53rd minute, lofting the ball over goalkeeper Benjamin Buchel.
The team then defended fiercely, sealing the historic result after years of tough defeats.
