Ryan Targeted with Red Paint Attack Before Title Loss to Mayer.

Mikaela Mayer defeated Sandy Ryan by majority decision in New York on Friday, taking the WBO welterweight title.

Fight week took a strange turn just hours before the bout when Sandy Ryan was hit with a can of red paint on her way to Madison Square Garden.

Ryan, defending her WBO welterweight title for the third time, said the incident "unsettled" her and may have contributed to her narrow defeat.

“I’m disappointed, but before coming to the venue, I had a hit-and-run [with paint], and it was definitely set up,” Ryan said.

Mikaela Mayer, 34, expressed surprise at the incident, stating it had nothing to do with her or her team.

Two judges scored the fight 97-93 and 96-94 for Mayer, while a third had it 95-95, handing Ryan her second defeat and another tough title defense in the U.S.
