Sandy Ryan from Britain is calling for an "immediate rematch" with American Mikaela Mayer after a heated lead-up to their fight in New York last weekend, where Ryan was hit with red paint in a controversial incident.
Mikaela Mayer claimed Sandy Ryan’s WBO welterweight title in a tense fight on Friday, winning by majority decision.
But the drama started long before the first bell. As Ryan, 31, made her way from her hotel to Madison Square Garden’s Theater, she was shockingly doused with red paint in a chaotic pre-fight attack.
By Monday, Ryan revealed that the paint incident was just the tip of the iceberg. She also faced threats and what she described as a “disgusting and pathetic smear campaign” on the day of the fight, further fueling her demand for an immediate rematch.
Sandy Ryan claimed that defamatory leaflets were spread before and after her fight, her team received threats, and she was advised to leave New York for her safety.
After winning, Mikaela Mayer, 34, said she was "shocked" by the paint attack and denied any involvement.
Ryan took to social media on Monday, calling for an immediate rematch. She said the fight was close but felt she had done enough to keep her title, noting that ESPN had her ahead by two rounds.
Two judges scored the bout 97-93 and 96-94 for Mayer, while the third judge ruled it a 95-95 draw.
The pair, who have known each other since their amateur days, have been caught in a bitter feud, especially after Ryan moved her training to Mayer’s U.S. gym.
