Track cyclist Matt Richardson, who earned three medals for Australia at the Paris Olympics, has switched his nationality and will now compete for Great Britain.
Matt Richardson, 25, was born in Kent but moved to Western Australia at nine, holding dual citizenship throughout his 16 years there. He will now join Great Britain’s sprint squad, coached by Sir Jason Kenny.
After his switch was approved by the Union Cycliste Internationale, Richardson shared on Instagram that the decision was "difficult" and made after "careful consideration." He emphasized his respect for Australia and its cycling team, noting that the move is about following his passion and pursuing new challenges.
AusCycling’s Jesse Korf expressed surprise and disappointment, highlighting that Richardson’s departure is a loss for a program that had seen significant success.
