England's revamped team suffered a 28-run loss to Australia in the first T20 match at Utilita Bowl.
Australia got off to a flying start, with Travis Head blasting 59 off 23 balls, and along with Matthew Short, they racked up 86 runs in the first six overs.
England, with three debutants and Phil Salt captaining for the first time, fought back strongly to bowl Australia out for 179.
Spinners Liam Livingstone (3-22) and Adil Rashid (1-23) were standout performers, while Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood took two wickets each.
England's reply faltered early with three quick wickets in the powerplay.
Livingstone and Sam Curran revived hopes with a 54-run partnership, but once they fell, England's lower order crumbled, and they were all out for 151 in the final over.
The teams head to Cardiff for the second T20 on Friday, with the series finale at Old Trafford on Sunday.
