Phil Mickelson will not compete in this year's Masters tournament.

Three-time champion Phil Mickelson will miss next month's Masters for the first time in 28 years.

The 51-year-old was on the list of participants until Monday, but has now been moved to a category listed as "not playing past champions".

According to the official website of the organisers, Phil Mickelson will not compete in this year's Masters tournament.

The US PGA champion, Mickelson, was involved in the Saudi Arabia-backed golf chain, but faced a backlash for comments made to writer Alan Shipnk in November.

The US suggested he and others had paid lawyers to build a settlement for the proposed breakaway contest, despite acknowledging that Saudi Arabia has "a terrible record on human rights".

Mickelson later apologized for what he described as "reckless" comments after heavy criticism and is now taking a break from the game.
