Boxer Cindy Ngamba, after making history, said she was 'just human like any other refugee' as she secured the Refugee Olympic Team's first-ever Games medal.
The 25-year-old Cindy Ngamba secured a medal for the Refugee Olympic Team by defeating sixth-seeded French boxer Davina Michel in a unanimous decision on Sunday, advancing to the women’s 75kg semi-finals.
As both losing semi-finalists receive bronze, Ngamba, who moved to the UK at age 10 but lacks British citizenship, is guaranteed a medal at Paris 2024.
Ngamba, who was the team's flagbearer at the Paris opening ceremony, said, 'It means the world to me to be the first refugee to win a medal. I’m just a human, like any other refugee and athlete around the world.'
The Refugee Olympic Team first competed in Rio 2016, and their previous best was two fifth-place finishes at Tokyo 2020. Ngamba will next face Atheyna Bylon of Panama on Thursday.
