Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from this month's Laver Cup, stating that he feels "other players can help Team Europe secure the win."
38-year-old Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, has not played since August when he and Carlos Alcaraz were defeated in the men's doubles quarter-finals at the Paris Olympics.
Though he hasn’t mentioned any specific injury, Nadal has previously hinted that 2024 might be his final season.
Nadal announced his withdrawal from the Laver Cup in Berlin, saying, "I won’t be able to compete next week. To really support Team Europe, there are other players who can help secure the win."
The Laver Cup, between Team Europe and Team World, begins on 20 September. Nadal had hoped to play a full 2024 season, but only appeared in one major this year — the French Open — where he lost in the first round to Alexander Zverev.
