Japan's Hideki Matsuyama relinquished a five-shot lead but made a strong comeback to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Tennessee.
Paris Olympics bronze medalist Hideki Matsuyama held a solid lead early but faltered, losing four shots over four holes, including a poor tee shot into the water on the 14th.
This slip allowed Viktor Hovland to briefly take the lead. However, Matsuyama regained his composure, sinking a crucial 26-foot putt on the 17th to retake the lead. He then delivered an impressive second shot on the 18th, followed by a birdie putt to win by two strokes at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, the opening leg of the PGA Tour’s playoffs.
Matsuyama, 32, competed at TPC Southwind without his regular caddie after his team was robbed in London following the Olympics.
Defending champion Viktor Hovland and American world number two Xander Schauffele finished tied for second at 15 under par, while world number one Scottie Scheffler placed fourth at 14 under.
The event, featuring the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings, saw the top 50 advance to the BMW Championship in Colorado.
