Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, who faced controversy over a reported failed gender test last year, won her first bout in the women's division at the Paris Olympics.
Despite a ban from the International Boxing Association (IBA), Lin, like Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, was allowed to compete at the Paris Olympics under the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Entering the arena to a mix of cheers and boos, 28-year-old Lin won her first bout in the 57kg category against Sitora Turdibekova. The two briefly shook hands after the bout but did not after the result was confirmed.
Turdibekova, leaving the arena in tears, did not speak to the media. Lin also stopped briefly but did not answer any questions.
The controversy surrounding the Olympics intensified after Italy's Angela Carini withdrew from her bout with Khelif, citing concerns for her safety.
While Khelif's bout lasted only 46 seconds, Lin's match went the full three rounds, ending with a unanimous decision in her favor.
