A perspex barrier will be installed around the Lee Valley VeloPark velodrome after a serious crash occurred there during the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
A high-speed crash at Lee Valley VeloPark during the 2022 Commonwealth Games threw England's Matt Walls into the crowd, injuring cyclists and spectators. This incident spurred calls from Sir Chris Hoy and Dame Laura Kenny for better safety measures.
To address these concerns, Lee Valley will install a 1.4-meter-high perspex barrier around the track later this month, costing £250,000.
This barrier is the first of its kind in the UK and only the third worldwide to be retrofitted to an existing velodrome.
The barrier, designed in consultation with cycling's world governing body, the UCI, aims to enhance safety for both riders and spectators while improving visibility for fans in lower seats.
This installation is part of a £750,000 upgrade to the venue, set to be completed by the end of August.
