When Ferrari informed Charles Leclerc that Lewis Hamilton would be joining the team next year, his immediate reaction was: "What an opportunity."
Seven-time champion Hamilton will become Charles Leclerc’s third teammate during his seventh season at Ferrari, following Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz.
"To me," Leclerc told BBC Sport in an exclusive interview, "it's an incredible opportunity. First, to learn from the most successful driver ever. And also to prove myself against Lewis, who sets the benchmark for everyone."
Within the F1 community, some saw Ferrari's decision to sign Hamilton last winter as a setback for Leclerc. For years, Ferrari had positioned Leclerc as their driver for the future World Championship title. Signing Hamilton raised questions about Ferrari's confidence in Leclerc.
But Leclerc, 26, sees it differently: "Not at all," he explained. "Because Ferrari is Ferrari. They need the best drivers in their cars. So, it makes complete sense for Ferrari's benefit."
