Ko Ends Eight-Year Major Drought with Women's Open Victory.

Lydia Ko ended an eight-year wait for a major title by winning the AIG Women’s Open with a thrilling finish in the windy conditions at St Andrews.

The New Zealander, fresh from winning Olympic gold earlier this month, birdied the final hole to close with a three-under-par 69, securing her third major title at seven under.

Last year's champion, Lilia Vu, missed a crucial 15-foot birdie putt on the last hole, and then missed a 12-inch putt, giving Ko a two-shot win. Vu's 73 left her tied for second with world number one Nelly Korda, who shot a 72, overnight leader Jiyai Shin (74), and China’s Ruoning Yin (70).

“It’s surreal,” said the 27-year-old Ko. “Winning the gold medal in Paris a few weeks ago felt almost too good to be true.”
