Paralympics Ireland has reported that County Tyrone swimmer Deaten Registe faced online racist abuse during the Paris Games.
At his first Paralympics, 20-year-old Deaten Registe finished sixth in the SB14 100m breaststroke final.
Prior to the race, Paralympics Ireland informed Registe's mother about online racist abuse aimed at him, though he was unaware of it at the time.
Paralympics Ireland chief executive Stephen McNamara condemned the abuse, saying, "It is just not acceptable, and I believe everyone in Ireland would agree."
McNamara added that they have spoken with Registe and his family, emphasizing their hope that such incidents won’t happen again, though acknowledging they can't guarantee it.
