The intense rivalry between WBO welterweight champion Sandy Ryan and Mikaela Mayer, set to clash on Thursday at Madison Square Garden Theatre, stems from a dispute over a shared coach.

The feud began when 31-year-old Sandy Ryan moved to Mikaela Mayer's gym in the U.S. This caused tension, as Mayer, 34, had planned to move to welterweight and felt forced to change her training setup.

Mayer called Ryan’s move “shady,” but Ryan denies stealing Mayer’s coach.

Ryan clarified that Kay Koroma isn’t her main trainer, with Flick Savoy taking the lead in her corner.

At a tense press conference, Mayer read a message where Ryan supposedly apologized for not discussing her gym move first.

Mayer urged Ryan to "own it" and be honest. Though the two fighters have known each other since their amateur days, Ryan admits there’s now “genuine dislike” between them.
