Australia manager Tony Gustavsson has resigned "by mutual agreement" after the women's team was eliminated in the group stage of a disappointing Olympic football campaign.
The Matildas finished third in Group B after losing to the United States and Germany. Their only win was a dramatic 6-5 victory over Zambia, who had led 5-2 early in the second half.
Australia's goal difference was not enough to advance, as they fell short compared to third-place finishers Colombia and Brazil in other groups, who moved on to the quarter-finals.
Tony Gustavsson has stepped down as manager, less than a year after leading Australia to their best-ever Women's World Cup finish, where they placed fourth.
In a statement on Football Australia's website, Gustavsson said, "It has been a great honour and privilege to have been the head coach of the Matildas over the past four years."
