Britain's Elliot Giles set a new road mile world record with a time of 3:51.3 at the New Balance KO Meile in Dusseldorf.
Elliot Giles, an Olympic 800m semi-finalist, set a new road mile world record with a time of 3:51.3, edging out a fierce challenge from US middle-distance runner Yared Nuguse.
Nuguse, who won bronze in the men’s 1500m at the Paris Games, finished with a strong 3:51.9.
Both runners surpassed the previous record of 3:56.13 set by Hobbs Kessler at the 2023 World Road Running Championships. They also beat the 3:54.6 mark set this year by Kenya’s Olympic 800m champion Emmanuel Wanyonyi, which is pending ratification.
The men’s one mile track world record is 3:43.13, set by Morocco’s Hicham el Guerrouj in July 1999, while Giles’ best track time is 3:51.63.
The road mile was officially recognized as a world record event only 12 months ago, but it has a storied history. Sydney Maree has held the men’s Fifth Avenue mile record in New York since 1981 with a time of 3:47.6.
At the same US race, which isn’t eligible for official records, Josh Kerr ran 3:47.9 last year. Britain's Laura Muir, winner in 2022, holds the women’s record with a time of 4:14.8.
