Geraint Thomas again grabbed the overall lead at Giro d'Italia.

Joao Almeida speeds up in the final kilometers of the race and cruise past Britain's Geraint Thomas to claim sensational victory on stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia on a summit finish.

Meanwhile, Britain's Geraint Thomas reclaimed the overall race lead at the Giro d'Italia.

A group of around 25 riders had made an initial breakaway from the front of the peloton as the course headed on to the category-three climb of Passo Bordala. The racing resumed over a tough 203-kilometer mountain course from Sabbio Chiese to Monte Bondone.

After the leading pair broke clear with 5km remaining, Almeida beat Thomas in a two-man sprint.

The Portuguese rider, who wore the Giro’s pink jersey for 15 days in 2020, earned the first Grand Tour stage win of his career after a 203km route from Sabbio Chiese that totaled over 5,000m of elevation gain.

Thomas reclaims the maglia rosa having lost it to Bruno Armirail on Saturday’s fourteenth stage, and leads Almeida by 18 seconds.

Roglic is in third, 29 seconds behind the leader, with Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious) a distant 2min 50sec behind Thomas in fourth. Armirail (Groupama-FDJ) drops to seventh overall.
