Caroline Garcia, once ranked fourth in the world, has decided to end her season early. She’s been struggling with anxiety and panic attacks, which have left her feeling "exhausted."
The 30-year-old French player, Caroline Garcia, didn’t get past the second round of any Grand Slam this year. Ranked 36th now, she’s dealing with a shoulder injury and the mental strain of life on the tennis circuit.
On X, Garcia shared her struggles, saying, “I’m tired of having my worth defined by my recent results, ranking, or mistakes. I need a mental reset and to step back from the relentless grind of tennis.”
She expressed exhaustion from anxiety, panic attacks, and missing family moments, along with feeling like she has no true home. Physically, she’s been pushing her injured shoulder too hard and realizes she needs more time to heal.
After an unexpected first-round loss at the US Open, she highlighted the damaging online abuse players face.
World number one Iga Swiatek also spoke out about the tour schedule, emphasizing that players' mental and physical health are often overlooked.
Naomi Osaka, a four-time Grand Slam champion, withdrew from the 2021 French Open due to her battle with depression and later took a break from tennis.
Similarly, Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, has spoken about her struggles with depression stemming from the pressure to succeed.
Despite winning 11 WTA titles and two Grand Slam doubles titles, Caroline Garcia feels she's been focusing on her shortcomings instead of her achievements. She reflected, “I’ve been stuck on what I haven’t accomplished. I never reached number one, never won a singles Slam, and struggled to stay in the top 10.”
Garcia has decided to take a break for now. She plans to take a few weeks off to recharge before starting her preparations for the 2025 season, focusing on her physical, mental, and tactical readiness.
