Few tennis players have felt the unpredictable twists of destiny quite like Sonay Kartal.
At the start of the year, 22-year-old Sonay Kartal feared she might not play tennis again after a health scare that had her in and out of the hospital.
Fast forward eight months, and Kartal is celebrating the best season of her career.
Two weeks ago, she won her first WTA Tour title in Monastir, breaking into the world’s top 100 for the first time.
"I had no idea if I’d be fit enough to compete this season," Kartal told BBC Sport. "It was a lot of uncertainty."
Her year had begun with promise after recovering from an injury. She won her ninth career title at an ITF event in Loughborough, aiming for a long and successful season. Then, fate threw her an unexpected challenge.
