From Tragedy to Triumph: The Underdogs and a Lost Generation's Victory.

On the morning of Wednesday, April 28, 1993, as the sun rose, the first bodies were discovered on the beach. Fishermen searched the creeks, divers took to the water, and a helicopter circled overhead.

By lunchtime, black kit bags, wreckage, and the remains of 24 of the 30 people on the plane had been recovered from the Atlantic Ocean and brought ashore in Gabon.

No more bodies would be found. Thus began a story that would captivate generations over two decades, reveal the depths of a nation's spirit, and deliver an unexpected triumph amid the disaster.

Four thousand miles away, one of Africa’s top footballers, Kalusha Bwalya, was gearing up for a long run.

Named Africa’s Player of the Year in 1988, Bwalya had scored a hat-trick in Zambia's 4-0 victory over Italy at the Seoul Olympics and had since joined PSV Eindhoven, partnering with Brazilian star Romario.

Bwalya and two other Europe-based players were set to join their Zambia teammates in Senegal for the start of the 1994 World Cup qualifiers.

Zambia's exceptional team was expected to secure a place in the tournament for the first time.
