FIFA president, Gianni Infantino is officially aiming to revise the format of the 2026 World Cup which is to be held in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
As being revealed earlier that FIFA is trying to accommodate 48 teams instead of 32 teams at the 2026 edition of World Cup.
It means world football's governing body are re-thinking the format for the next World Cup as their original plans to have 16 groups of three teams in the first phase, with two from each advancing to the next stage. However, the success of Qatar has seen concern arise.
Now, FIFA is trying to consider two distinct alternatives. One option would be to divide the squad into 12 groups of four. The top two teams would advance, as would the best third-placed team.
A second proposal is to divide the tournament in half. Each half would include six groups of four teams, with the winners of each half meeting in the final.
According to Gianni Infantino the decisions will be made next year after considering and going through all the facts related to the new format of the game.
