Alex Morgan, U.S. striker and two-time World Cup champion, played her final game in the National Women's Soccer League on Sunday, marking an emotional end to her professional football career.
Alex Morgan, 35, announced her retirement last week after learning she is expecting her second child.
In her final game, she captained the San Diego Wave in a 4-1 loss to North Carolina Courage.
Morgan, already a mom to daughter Charlie, missed a penalty in the 10th minute and was substituted shortly after to a standing ovation from the 26,516 fans.
Addressing the crowd, Morgan reflected on her career, saying, "What a ride it’s been."
A key player for 15 years, she helped the U.S. win World Cups in 2015 and 2019, as well as Olympic gold in 2012.
She thanked her teammates and the fans, sharing her gratitude for the unforgettable moments, especially this final one on the field. "From the bottom of my heart, thank you," she said.
