England prop Ellis Genge has officially signed a new long-term contract with Bristol Bears, solidifying his commitment to the club. This exciting news promises to energize fans as Genge continues to play a key role in the team's quest for success.
With his powerful presence on the field and leadership qualities, Genge’s extension is a significant boost for Bristol as they aim for a strong season ahead.
A product of the Bristol Bears' academy, the 29-year-old forward played a crucial role in the team’s strong finish to last season, helping them win six of their last seven league matches and narrowly missing the playoffs by two points.
“Hopefully, this isn’t the end; it’s a long contract, so I really feel at home here,” Genge told BBC Radio Bristol. “I didn’t realize how much it meant to me until now.”
Genge returned to his hometown club in the summer of 2022 after spending six years with Leicester Tigers, where he captained the team to a Premiership title in his final season.
“For me, leaving Leicester right after winning the Premiership title in 2022 to come here was a big step,” Genge shared. “My family questioned my decision, but I knew it was the right one.
“The training ground here is far superior to 90% of other clubs, which was a big attraction for me. It’s incredible to work somewhere you truly appreciate.
“It was an easy choice for me. I’m from here, and wearing a Bristol shirt means a lot to me. My passion for playing for Bristol matches my passion for playing for England.”
Genge is looking forward to the upcoming season, stating, “If you’re not first, you’re last. No one remembers who finishes in the top four; they remember who wins.”
“Personally, I’d love to bring a trophy back to Bristol and inspire more people from my area to take up rugby.”
Genge played 54 minutes in Bristol’s 24-3 victory over Newcastle Falcons in their Gallagher Premiership opener on Friday.
