Center Joel Embiid has officially signed a contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers.
The 30-year-old Cameroon-born superstar has secured a maximum three-year contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers worth a staggering $193 million (£145 million), according to reports.
As the 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player, Embiid has been a key figure for the Sixers since being drafted in 2014, and now he’s determined to lead the team to its first championship since 1983.
“I started as a Sixer and want to finish my career here,” Embiid stated. Reflecting on his journey, he added, “As a 20-year-old kid from Cameroon, I had no idea how fortunate I was to land in Philadelphia.”
His commitment signals not just his ambition but a deep connection to the city and its fans as he chases that elusive title.
“Through all the ups and downs, the city and its fans have meant everything to me, and I’m so grateful for their support. Philadelphia is home, and it’s time to bring this community an NBA championship,” Embiid expressed.
After moving to the U.S. at 16, he attended the University of Kansas. Last season, he showcased his talent by averaging 34.7 points, 11 rebounds, and 5.6 assists.
“Joel has established himself as one of the greatest Sixers ever and is on track to become one of the best players in history,” said Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations for the 76ers.
Earlier this year, Embiid was diagnosed with Bell's palsy, a facial condition, but he continues to focus on his game and the team's success.
