Charlie Edwards moved closer to a world-title opportunity by defeating Thomas Essomba on points to claim the European bantamweight title at York Hall in London.
Charlie Edwards won a hard-fought points decision, though the fight was closer than the scorecards suggested. While Edwards outworked Thomas Essomba over 12 rounds, the Cameroonian landed more powerful shots, especially his left hook.
After the victory, Edwards called out Paul Butler and expressed interest in facing Japan’s world champions. "I’m a world champion, and I want to fight champions. Japan has them all," he said.
This win marks Edwards' 20th career victory as he aims to become a two-weight champion within the next year.
The former WBC flyweight champion, inactive for 19 months, has now won three fights in 15 months.
