Economics lived up to his favorite status in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown, narrowly defeating Aidan O'Brien's Auguste Rodin by a neck to win Ireland's top flat race.
William Haggas’s Economics was a strong favorite for the Irish Champion Stakes, despite this being his first Group One race. His win in the Dante Stakes marked him as a top Derby contender, though he missed Epsom and hadn’t raced in 91 days before his victory in the Prix Guillaume d'Ornano last month.
Starting as a 7-4 favorite with Tom Marquand, Economics surged past O'Brien’s 2022 winner Luxembourg in the final stretch and held off a late challenge from another Ballydoyle runner.
Auguste Rodin, who has had a season of highs and lows, underlined his inconsistency with a disappointing fifth place in the King George after winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.
