Posted 1 years agoAustralia comfortably thrashed Pakistan by 62 runs in a high-scoring World Cup group game to grab their momentum back on track with a second straight win thanks to brilliant centuries by openers David Warner and Mitchell Marsh.
With the stunning victory, Australia moved up to fourth in the standings -- level with fifth-placed Pakistan on four points but with a better net run rate.
Batting first, Australia's openers responded quickly and gained their momentum to post a massive score of 367-9 in the stipulated 50 overs.
Openers David Warner (163) and Mitchell Marsh (121) put on 259 for the first wicket by smashing 18 sixes and 24 fours between them.
The Warner-Marsh partnership was the highest opening stand for Australia in the World Cup, and just one run short of their highest for any wicket. It was the sixth highest partnership in World Cup history.
"The partnership was awesome. Once we got the pace of the wicket in five-six overs we targeted the next set of guys," said Warner, who was named player of the match.
Meanwhile, Shaheen Afridi led Pakistan's late fightback in the first innings with a five-wicket haul. Haris Rauf took three wickets.
In response, Pakistan's Abdullah Shafique (64) and Imam-ul-Haq (70) laid a good platform with a 134-run opening partnership but the rest of the top order failed to build on promising starts as they were bundled out for 305.
