Defending champion Coco Gauff rallied from a set down to defeat Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, securing her spot in the fourth round of the US Open.
American third seed Coco Gauff kept her title defense alive with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Ukraine's Elina Svitolina.
Gauff, aiming to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2014 to defend the US Open title, acknowledged the challenge, saying, "This win means a lot. I knew it would be a tough match against Elina. She's a fighter, and I had to bring my best tennis."
Next, Gauff will face fellow American Emma Navarro, who advanced after a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk. The two last met in the fourth round of Wimbledon, where Navarro pulled off an upset.
Reflecting on that match, Gauff said, "I mentally collapsed on the court at Wimbledon. I know I need to bring my best game and stay focused from start to finish."
In another match, last year’s runner-up Aryna Sabalenka came from a set down to defeat Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, in a late-night contest in New York.
