Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is working to address his team's tendency to concede too many goals following a 2-1 loss to a young Real Madrid side in Charlotte, the last match of their U.S. tour.
First-half goals from Dani Ceballos and Brahim Diaz secured Madrid's win despite Noni Madueke's header for Chelsea.
Chelsea looked vulnerable defensively, conceding 12 goals in five pre-season games in America and winning just one.
Maresca addressed the "very high" defensive line, a habit from last season, in early meetings with his players.
Ceballos scored in the 19th minute, following a deflected Lucas Vazquez shot. Diaz added another in the 27th minute, rounding goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen to score from a tight angle.
Chelsea's Madueke headed in Enzo Fernandez's cross in the 39th minute for a consolation goal.
