Brazil legend, Marta's highly decorated career ends as Brazil failed to reach the knockout stage at the Women's World Cup.

Brazil legend, Marta's long and incredible career has come to an end as her team couldn't make out to reach the knockout stage at the ongoing Women's World Cup.

Brazil's failure to advance to the knockouts after its scoreless draw with Jamaica on Wednesday means that Marta will retire without a long-coveted World Cup trophy, but she still leaves a profound legacy on and off the pitch.

The 37-year-old started for the first time in the tournament, only coming to the bench in the 80th minute as Brazil searched for some spark to find a goal.

It is expected she will continue playing but has already decided a seventh World Cup in 2027, as a 41-year-old, would be beyond her.

"For me, that is the end, but it's just the beginning for the others," Marta said post-game.

Marta holds the record for the most World Cup goals scored, women or men, with 17. She was the first player to score in five consecutive Women’s World Cups, debuting at the 2003 tournament.

"Her legacy continues; it doesn’t end here," her Brazil teammate Ary Borges said. "Marta is a woman who will continue to inspire not only my generation but future generations also."
