Belgium's Triathlon Hopes Dashed by Athlete's Sudden Illness.

Belgium has withdrawn from the Olympic mixed relay triathlon at Paris 2024 due to one of their athletes falling ill.

Claire Michel, who finished 38th in the women's triathlon on Wednesday, has fallen ill, prompting Belgium to withdraw from the Olympic mixed relay triathlon at Paris 2024.

Belgian newspaper De Standaard reported that the 35-year-old contracted E. coli, though BBC Sport has not confirmed this. Concerns about the Seine's poor water quality have been prominent throughout the Games, causing delays and postponements in the triathlon events.

The Belgian Olympic Committee (COIB) did not specify Michel's illness but stated that the decision to withdraw was made in consultation with the athletes and their team. COIB expressed hope that lessons would be learned for future triathlon competitions.
