The 33-year-old, Rory McIlroy finished joint-fifth with Open champion Collin Morikawa, after a final round 69 which left him four shots behind winner
Matt Fitzpatrick.
Rory McIlroy had mixed emotions after seeing another opportunity to end his major drought end in disappointment in the US Open.
McIlroy has finished second, eighth and fifth position in this year's major championships.
McIlroy went into the final round at Brookline three shots off the lead and made an ideal start with a birdie on the first, but carded a total of three birdies and four bogeys in his first 11 holes to effectively end his chances.
Losing the opportunity he exclaimed that "I have to stay patient at this point because if I just keep putting myself in position, sooner or later it's going to be my day and I'm going to get one."
