Bayer Leverkusen maintained their flawless start to this season's Champions League with a tense home victory against AC Milan.
Victor Boniface gave Xabi Alonso's team a well-deserved lead in the 51st minute, tapping in a rebound after AC Milan's keeper, Mike Maignan, had saved Jeremie Frimpong's shot.
Milan fought back and nearly equalized with seven minutes to go when Theo Hernandez's deflected long-range shot hit the crossbar. Alvaro Morata also came close with a header that went just wide.
Leverkusen had dominated the match until the final moments and had a goal disallowed in the first half. Boniface had initially scored in the 21st minute after a great cross from Frimpong, but VAR determined the Dutch wing-back was offside.
Leverkusen had opened their Champions League campaign with a convincing 4-0 win over Feyenoord, while Milan suffered a 3-1 defeat at home to Liverpool.
