Former Boston Celtics star basketball player Bill Russell, one of the sports world's greatest winners as the anchor of a team has died at the age of 88.
The Boston Celtics legend, Bill won 11 NBA championships as a player in 13 years, including two as the first Black head coach in any major U.S. sport.
While at the University of San Francisco, he won back-to-back NCAA championships in 1955 and 1956. He won the award for the tournament's most outstanding player in 1955 and was the UPI collegiate player of the year in 1956.
A Hall of Famer, five-time Most Valuable Player and 12-time All-Star, Russell in 1980 was voted the greatest player in the NBA history by basketball writers. He remains the sport's most decorated champion and also won two college titles and an Olympic gold medal.
Bill Russell will be remembered as a tremendous rebounder, legendary post defender and NBA Hall of Famer. But more than anything, he will be remembered as the greatest winner in basketball history.
