Rafael Nadal remains French Open doubt after Monte Carlo withdrawal because of injury

Rafael Nadal’s long-awaited return to action continues as he has withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters with the all-important French Open on the horizon.

The Spaniard has not played since a hip injury contributed to a straight sets defeat in the second round of the Australian Open. Consequently he was forced to miss the Indian Wells and Miami events and many suspected the 36-year-old would be back in time for the start of the clay court season - his most successful portion of the year.

He had been due to begin his preparations for the French Open on the clay courts of Monaco, which begins on Saturday.

But the 36-year-old has confirmed he is not yet ready to play, suggesting he remains a doubt for the year’s second grand slam at Roland Garros, though Nadal indicated he hoped to return "soon”.
