Inaugural edition of women’s IPL set to kick off in 2023
As women’s cricket experiences growing popularity, fans are
in for a treat with the first edition of women’s IPL set to take place in 2023,
after the conclusion of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The inaugural season is
planned to have a total of 22 matches, and 5 teams of 18 players, with a cap on
the number of international players set to 6 and 5 playing at any time.
The group phase will
have teams face off against each other twice, in 20 matches, with the leading
team booking a spot in the final. The second finalist will be decided by a
match between the second and third ranked teams. Interestingly, the WPL is set
to overlap with the first edition of the Women’s Pakistan Super League.
The proposed framework also involves teams playing ten
matches each in some selected venues, with ten matches each of the next season
in other views, till all are cycled through, as opposed to home and away
matches due to the small number of teams. Proposed teams may belong to various
zones, rather than cities with Dharamshala or Jammu for the North Zone, Pune or
Rajkot for the West Zone, Indore, Nagpur or Raipur for the Central Zone, Ranchi
or Cuttack for the East Zone, Kochi or Vishakhapatnam for the South Zone and
Guwahati for the North-East Zone. Alternately, teams may have a city wise base
in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.
