South Shields has appointed Julio Arca as their new manager after Kevin Phillips' departure.

The newly-promoted National League North side South Shields is delighted to announce the appointment of former Sunderland and Middlesbrough star Julio Arca as their new manager.

Julio Arca took up the role after the departure of his one-time teammate Kevin Phillips.

The 42-year-old Argentinian returns to the 1st Cloud Arena five years after ending his playing career there with 120 appearances, six trophies and three promotions.

He replaces former England international Phillips, who guided the Mariners to the Northern Premier League title before leaving the club by mutual consent earlier this month.

He also skippered the team to FA Vase glory at Wembley as the Mariners won a historic quadruple of trophies in 2016-17.
