Rory McIlroy closed his round with three straight birdies, shooting a three-under 68. He’s just two shots behind the leader after the first round of the Irish Open.
The Northern Irishman, playing at home for the first time since 2019, carded six birdies and three bogeys to lead the Irish charge in challenging crosswinds at Royal County Down.
McIlroy ended with a three-under 68, staying close to English leader Todd Clements, who ended the day with an eagle on the 18th hole.
Clements is one shot ahead of Finland's Sami Valimaki and Spain's Alejandro Del Rey.
McIlroy, the top Irish contender, was pleased with his performance. “Happy enough,” he said. “Shooting three-under around this course is always good.
The conditions were tough early on, but I managed to take advantage of the calmer wind at the end.”
Shane Lowry shot a one-over 72, while Tom McKibbin finished two shots worse.
