Argentina and Paris St-Germain forward Lionel Messi won the second FIFA The Best honor of his career, recognized as the top men's player in world football, while Alexia Putellas won her second women's trophy in a row.
Lionel Messi conquered the crown after winning his maiden World Cup title with Argentina in December in Qatar.
Messi cruised past his Paris Saint Germain (PSG) teammate Kylian Mbappe and Real Madrid captain Karim Benzema to lift the prestigious trophy at Salle Pleyel in Paris. In the FIFA Awards vote, Messi had 52 points, Mbappe 44, and Benzema 34. It is the second time that Messi bagged the honor inaugurated by FIFA in 2016.
The Best women's player was Spain's Alexia Putellas for a second straight year. Putellas won her award from Alex Morgan of the United States and Beth Mead, who led England to the European Championship title in 2022.
Emiliano 'Dibu' Martinez won The Best men's goalkeeper, Lionel Scaloni claimed The Best men's manager, and Argentina's fans earned The Best fan award for their show of support in Qatar.
Among the award recipients on the women's side, England's Mary Earps won the best goalkeeper, while England manager Sarina Wiegman captured the top coach honor after the Lionesses won their first major trophy at Euro 2022.
