Faith Kipyegon scripted a new 1500m world record at the 2023 Florence Diamond League.

Athletics General

Kenyan star Faith Kipyegon displayed an eye-tickling performance to break the 1500m world record at the Golden Gala Diamond League meeting in Florence.

The Kenyan star, Faith Kipyegon smashed the women’s 1500m world record, clocking 3 minutes, 49.11 seconds.

Kipyegon, a two-time Olympic champion, and two-time world champion, took 96 hundredths of a second off Ethiopian Genzebe Dibaba‘s world record from 2015. Kipyegon began the day as the second-fastest woman in history at 3:50.37.

The 29-year-old was already the most decorated female miler in history, the only one with four global 1500m titles. Her Olympic gold medals in 2016 and 2021 were separated by a 22-month maternity leave from the competition (that included 12 months without running).

Laura Muir settled for silver by finishing the track at 3.57:09 (season best).

There was disappointment for Dina Asher-Smith, who pulled out of the women's 100m at the last minute.

On the other frame, JuVaughn Harrison won the high jump in dramatic fashion, clearing 2.32m with his last attempt to beat Sanghyeok Woo.

And there was home joy in the women's long jump as Larissa Iapichino took victory with her first-round effort of 6.79m.

Tara Davis-Woodhall (6.74m) was second with Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk (6.59m) in third.
